Company Overview:A respected multi-disciplinary engineering firm is seeking a Principal Geotechnical Field Engineer to join its growing team in Ashland, Virginia. This is a field-based, hands-on role (not an office position), ideal for a seasoned professional with strong construction materials testing and geotechnical field experience. Candidates must be located in or near Virginia, this is not a remote or relocation-supported role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and perform on-site construction materials testing and geotechnical field investigations
- Supervise and train junior field staff
- Oversee drilling, sampling, and testing activities; prepare accurate field logs and documentation
- Interpret engineering and construction drawings to ensure compliance with specifications
- Perform field quality control inspections on a variety of public and private projects
- Interface directly with contractors, clients, and project managers during field operations
- Maintain accurate project records and ensure adherence to VDOT and industry standards
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
- ACI, NICET, and VDOT certifications are required
- 35 years of experience in geotechnical field engineering and materials testing
- Strong leadership skills and ability to manage field operations
- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation
- Capable of lifting and handling 6080 lbs. of field testing equipment and materials
- Experience with standard testing procedures for soils, concrete, and asphalt
- Must reside in Virginia or nearby
Preferred:
- PE license or EIT working toward PE is a plus
- Experience with field testing software or reporting tools
